Where I’m From: Chase Rathgeb

I am from a place of love and security

And a family foundation of support

We came together, a tree with many branches swaying in the wind

People grew and shifted but we are all still rooted together

I am from change, changing where I lived, and my lifestyle.

Time for a change, time to move, “look at it as an adventure”, my parents said.

They tried to exhilarate me more than once before.

They made it seem like it was as easy as a turn of the head

I felt tentative about moving, yet happy,

a mix of emotions consumed me.

The task seemed as unapproachable as a star.

But I adjusted and made the long haul

Through family, friends, and saying y’all

I am from a place of learning.

I am from Columbus Elementary School, where young minds set sail.

A place I could call my second home

Where I deployed the best lunch table.

Also, where I discovered my true passions, and where I belonged.

I’m from Indiana sports, the Pacers and the Colts.

When times were rough, and school was tough,

I could always look forward to the weekend where the colts would become victorious,

or the pacers making the game winning shot.

I am from Illinois.

Where the corn grew miles high,

much taller than I.

The Land of Lincoln and a promised blanket of snow every year.

Most importantly, I am from Georgia, where I live today.

Because life is a journey, and I intend to see where it takes me.

Reflection

When reflecting on the poem I wrote, it really makes me reflect on my life so far. The journeys and adventures I have experienced, my friends old and new. It makes me realize how lucky I am as a person to have turned out who I am today. The small experiences and events in my life as a baby that developed me as a person.

I have eczema. Eczema is a disease of the skin where the person involved is missing key proteins and it is also known as dermatitis or inflammation of the skin. Most of the people that know I have it will say something along the lines of “Oh, my nephew had that” or some other family member. Then they proceed to tell me about some “magical” product that did the trick because that person with eczema has it a lot easier. It could definitely be worse for me, but there is no doubt in my mind I have a very bad case of it. My parents graciously buy every kind of medicine for me, but most of them don’t work. However, my parents keep buying medicine for me because they care about me, and because they know it has been difficult for all of us. This has developed my career choice because I know that there is another child out there with eczema even worse than me, so I want to dedicate a part of my life to find the cure for eczema. To prevent all the future cases of pain in children just like me.
