Bohemian Rhapsody

Ever since I was 5 years old, I liked to listen to the tracks my dad listened to, not because I wanted to be like him and do what he did, but because I truly enjoyed it. I enjoy 70’s to 00’s rock, whether it is classic, or just hair band rock. I enjoyed artists like Guns N Roses and Aerosmith, so I was a little different from the kids learning songs like Old McDonald or knowing the very latest pop songs at the time. I think, that the greatest part about loving rock songs before I was born is that every song I will ever want to listen to is already out there. So, as I got a little bit older and I learned to appreciate music a lot more, I discovered more and more bands that I loved from different times. In fact as I wrote this very paper, I was listening to Foreigner, a popular band from the 70’s. I saw many different bands I enjoyed, and I found it hard to determine a favorite band, even though it seemed everyone had a favorite band or artist. However, I had one song that had been my favorite song for a long time: “Bohemian Rhapsody.” This song written in 1975 by Queen is just amazing to me.

There are many reasons I think this is a great song, but to me the most important one is the way it changed in genre mid-song. This was known to be Freddie Mercury’s song, like his main project. When most people first heard it, they probably imagined the entire band was on drugs, which is strangely how many songs at that time were made, and that fact is very possible. But the point is that this song was everywhere at once. It began very slowly as just the men singing with a piano in the background. They spoke about a poor boy with a poor life, and a mother who had killed a man. It continues this negative tone of singing and writing describing “shivers down my spine” and “I don’t wanna die.” It starts out this way, then all of the sudden there is a jump in the song with voices coming from everywhere, with mentions of different mythological and real characters through time. After, they describe a trapped person screaming for help, and almost immediately after a soft tone, a guitar solo occurs, and it makes you wonder where the heck it came from. But that is the greatest feature of this song, the explosiveness and transition to every tone form sad to angry to more. As the song ends, it repeats the quote, “Nothing really matters.”

Most of the music I listen to depends on my mood, like pump-up music before a match or a game, and pick me up music in tough times, and even some pop on a sunny day. But, this song, I will never understand, just gets me pumped and removes any other negative feeling. I get lost in the song, quietly mouthing the words to myself.

Bohemian Rhapsody Review

Honestly, I had so much fun writing this piece of writing about my favorite songs, there are two things in life I could talk forever about, and that is sports and music, I dedicated a famous piece on the portfolio to both of them. I really liked being able to listen to music and if my parents asked me why I was listening to music while I was doing homework, I could tell them that that was my homework. I liked being able to analyze music, because I was able to appreciate it for more than how it sounds and who made the song.
