Making the Grade
In today’s school systems, we over nurture our students. Extra credit, points for effort can lead to laziness and getting a grade they don't deserve. I believe, if we continue this, country-wide disaster could occur.
This method of teaching isn't what America needs, Way back when the United States was founded, we stood for freedom and getting what we deserved. Back in the 70's, grades were what they were. There was no extra credit or begging to raise it that was it. Those are the people currently running America. One day, the kids from the 2000's and late 90's will run it with a different attitude. They believe that giving it 80% is just enough to get by.
Next, I believe this is overall bad work ethic. Children today would gladly take whatever grade as long as they move to the next one, which will slow down our advancement in society. Last year in Atlanta, Georgia, a light tower collapsed, killing a worker. It collapsed because of a miscalculation by a worker. Everyone makes mistakes, but this kind of job should have been checked multiple times to insure no mistakes were made. The very next year, two 10,000 lb. steel beams crashed into a student athletic complex and Kurt Wiesenfeld quoted, "should we give partial credit since no one got hurt?" These are real situations that happen because of bad ethics we are teaching right now.
Overall, it is extremely important that we let the kids earn their grade and get what they deserve. Even if that means failing or losing a scholarship. The students would believe it is not fair, but in the end, it will improve us as people and as a society.
Reflection
I learned in this piece by Kurt Wiesenfeld, the importance of teaching proper work ethic to our children. After reading this piece and doing an analysis, I realize some of the disastrous mistakes that could occur due to small errors from lack of thoroughness. The people learning these ethics right now are going to be running the country one day, and that scares me. It felt very easy to write about this subject overall because it interests me, and I have a sort of special passion for it.
